Jerusalem

And did those feet in ancient time,
   Walk upon Englands mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
   On Englands pleasant pastures seen!

   And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
   And was Jerusalem builded here,
   Among these dark Satanic Mills?

   Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold:
Bring me my Chariot of fire!

I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
   Till we have built Jerusalem,
In Englands green & pleasant Land.

Personally I don't have a problem in interpreting what Blake is saying here. Blake addresses the imagination of Mankind yet people misguidedly attempt to comprehend his works with intellect and jingoism. Jerusalem here is not that wretched scab in the Middle East or some disguised plot or political agenda. For Blake it is a metaphor for his ideal, for everything that is worthwhile, beautiful and inspiring. A vibrant melting pot of ideas, encouragement, aspiration, respect, joy and purpose. William Blake, with his visionary's view, could see, as I delight to do, into the very soul of Englands green & pleasant Land. For England at its heart is Angel Land and Blake sought, still seeks, to reawaken that spirit (While the Darkness is increasingly desperate to contain it).
As with all inspired works this poem is multidimensional itself. There are several levels and for Blake, Jerusalem represents the New Age of Aquarius too - or whatever you want to call this frequential environment we are increasingly being influenced by. He rhymes the meaning of the name 'Jerusalem', which is 'Rain of Peace' into the long prophesised 1000-year, 'Reign of Peace'. He sees an opportunity here for his ideals to succeed, and they can if enough of us truly want it. But if not (A poet's eye remember!)...

"And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them."
~ Numbers 20: 12

If you didn't clock the numbers you aren't concentrating.

The children of Israel are all of humanity, it is what we called ourselves when we travelled through the stars and when we first touched down on Earth. (12)

There's certainly a prophetic flavour to William Blake's poem 'Jerusalem' - and the third verse is now forever Olympian: Chariots of Fire. And isn't it curious that the work this poem introduces is the epic, 'Milton' (Mil-ton), the giant of visionary poetry, John Milton, who just happens to have been born in Bread Street at Stratford. John Milton of course wrote the classic Paradise Lost (itself not unconcerned with the proposition here). Past and present interweaves. The Olympic stadium is being built by Sir Robert McAlpine contractors on land beside the City Mill River, and the Old Pudding Mill River, not far from 'the great millennial age'. (Mills peppered the Stratford area - sorry about that.) Lord McAlpine, of that same family, has been accused of satanism by a number of people - Satanic Mills? 33 buildings had to be removed. (13)

Blake even set his poem 'Jerusalem' around Kings Cross.

The fields from Islington to Marybone,
to Primrose Hill and St John’s Wood,
were builded over with pillars of gold
and there Jerusalem’s pillars stood.

Or so they say. Geographically perhaps...

Jerusalem

Michael X Mary & Joseph

“I must Create a System or be enslav'd by another Man's”
~ William Blake
Too many are too quick, I would suggest, to pounce upon the Zion-Israel - must be a Jewish conspiracy wagon and several seem intent on besmirching the far-seeing, visionary artist and poet William Blake, a man who was vastly unappreciated, much misjudged and berated during his life to have been one of them. Yet supposedly, his mention of 'Jerusalem' pins the label 'Zionist' on him! What mystics, artists and poets like Blake and latter day 'Blakes' like Neil Hague and Bagoll the Traveller are doing is revelatory. They show us what is and where, painting pictures with lyrics and rainbows (moody and shining). Not chained like the Olympic logo to mundane bogs and flatlands,
they wander and record the many mansions of real reality and bring back their awesome visions to encourage each of us to explore these realms for ourselves.

When I was at Grammar school in England one of the only joys for me, and for lots of my mates, was when Jerusalem was the hymn of the day at morning assembly. 99.9 per centy of the time we'd shuffle and mutter through some god-awful 'Onward Christian Soldiers' or some thankfully forgotten dirge but when Jerusalem came on the place lit up, fair blazed it did; and every one of us gave it everything we had.

Here it is at the Proms (You might want to stop it at 3.07):
The Stolen and Perverted Writings of Homer & Ovid: of Plato & Cicero. which all Men ought to contemn: are set up by artifice against the Sublime of the Bible. but when the New Age is at leisure to Pronounce; all will be set right: & those Grand Works of the more ancient & consciously & professedly Inspired Men, will hold their proper rank, & the Daughters of Memory shall become the Daughters of Inspiration. Shakspeare & Milton were both curbd by the general malady & infection from the silly Greek & Latin slaves of the Sword.
Rouze up O Young Men of the New Age! set your foreheads against the ignorant Hirelings! For we have Hirelings in the Camp, the Court, & the University: who would if they could, for ever depress Mental & prolong Corporeal War. Painters! on you I call! Sculptors! Architects! Suffer not the fash[i]onable Fools to depress your powers by the prices they pretend to give for contemptible works or the expensive advertizing boasts that they make of such works; believe Christ & his Apostles that there is a Class of Men whose whole delight is in Destroying. We do not want either Greek or Roman Models if we are but just & true to our own Imaginations, those Worlds of Eternity in which we shall live for ever; in Jesus our Lord.
~ William Blake, preface to MILTON

And underneath it all he quotes this passage from the bible:

Would to God that all the Lords people were Prophets.
     ~ Numbers XI. ch 29 v.

He's prophesising...and telling!

But in the preface, before the poem and on the same page, Blake in rousing pros exhorts us to see through the dark worlds of intellectual words (the Satanic Mills) - much as I have been attempting to do with my rustic writings. What else might we attribute these four lines to?
