THE BALI ATROCITY
In 1992 I spent 10 days in Bali. Kuta is the most vibrant part of this supposed paradise (but definitely smelly) island. Even though it has since been modernised in some sections, for the most part it is constructed of flimsy buildings, whch wouldn't take much to bowl over. The press are describing the Sari Club as if its the only club in Bali that is patronised by large numbers of foreign tourists. This is rubbish. It is just one of very many. It is however in a dilapidated section. The Indonesian government and their string-pullers would obviously like to clean this area up and replace it with more lucrative facilities.
Whilst there, I met through an aquaintance, one of the islands 'secret policemen' he told me that because of the trouble the islanders and holidaymakers get from the Javanese (the watch-salesmen etc) Kuta is full of secret police. Apparently the street-hawkers are all controlled by a couple of Mr Bigs, and that nothing occurs on the island that these gangsters don't know about.
The world's major hotel chains have their resorts dotted around Bali, which are frequented by the rich and famous. If a bomb had gone off at one of these sites then any sick kudos that a terrorist organisation craved would have been far more significant. It didn't, even though it would have been just as easy to accomplish.
It seems to me that this despicable act has benefited many hidden hands, but the least of these would be Al -Qaeda.
As for this being a hit on Australians, this is utter rubbish. Australia is far from an impregnable fortress.
Because of the huge mining industry, explosives are 10-a -penny. Police are always finding caches on bush properties.
But Australians are in general opposed to terrorist attacks by its government and allies upon unarmed and voiceless people in the middle-east.

Absolutely no reason to have had tight security before then chaps?
Of course, Indonesia, with it's angelic human rights record is a completely trustworthy state, and we must believe everything they say.
THE WORD ON THE STREET

"In Paddy's, two incendiary devices (possibly grenades) were planted in two toilets which went off, causing confusion in the place and consequently everyone running out onto the street. Simultaneously in Saris across the road, someone set on fire the thatched roof and once again caused confusion with people fighting to get out. Obviously Saris took off in flames very quickly. Also happening at the same time - a car driven by a Balinese (containing a bomb) was driving down the road. Two Indonesians had hired him and just before getting to the Sari/Paddy site, they jumped out. It has been said that military was definitely involved, ie the incendiary devices and the way the plan had been implemented."
