If one makes an honest assessment of quantum physics, consciousness research, Oriental spiritual philosophies and shamanism, one cannot help but come to the conclusion that consciousness can modify phenomena in the material world.
Professor Stanislav Grof (1931 - )

Introduction

If there are any feasible and convincing scientific explanations that might finally shed light on the subtle and ephemeral phenomena of the paranormal, then they are the mind-numbing theories found within quantum physics. Indeed, it has been said by Professor Brian Josephson that if mankind had not experienced the paranormal then quantum physics would have predicted it was there. Although this branch of science deals, not with certainties but with probabilities, as scientific test equipment and methodology improves both in technique and sensitivity, each time another aspect or theory concerning quantum physics is tested it has been found to be absolutely correct. This has created a degree of friction between those scientists who believe only in the absolute physical realities of Newtonian physics and another school of thought that sees the ultimate answer to reality in the convoluted reasoning of particle physics. This has forced the practicalities of conventional physics to confront the possibility that all is most definitely not as it first appears, especially when contemplating human perception. At the quantum level, as with certain classes of subatomic particles, it is possible that consciousness exists simultaneously in more than one state and at multiple frequencies (with their attendant harmonics, audible and otherwise) and is therefore continuously in contact with more than one version of reality.
The concept is quite startling, and the implication is that as one frequency functions it causes another frequency sharing a multiple of its function to resonate in sympathy. Does this allow us to exist in a ubiquitous ‘mind-state’ which is in communication with a sentient universe’? Is it possible that consciousness is not necessarily confined to the skull and perhaps Aldous Huxley got it right when he observed that, ‘The brain does not produce mind, it limits it’? As this article progresses we shall see examples where this hypothesis may indeed be the valid. There is one example of technology currently in development that exploits this unique condition and that is the slow but sure evolution of quantum computers. This uses the fact that any given particle can exist simultaneously in a multitude of states, off, on, both on and off, neither on
nor off and in any state in between. Therefore, the computer is asked, in effect, to multi-task much as current computers do, the difference here being it is multi-tasking in an infinite number of states and carrying out perhaps millions of simultaneous functions thus vastly reducing the time taken to complete any given operation.

Approaching the Far Horizons

As we saw in the introduction there are many possibilities; perhaps we might compare the continuation of consciousness after death to the existence of alternative realities that we can only access in a non-physical manner and we shall return to this concept later. Perhaps mediums access these regions through a form of resonance and if so is this electromagnetic in nature? Is it possible that rather as radio sets use coils to process and capture signals does the coil of the DNA molecule also act in the same manner? It might be argued that, for example, the rather showy phenomenon of spoon bending as practised by Uri Geller (and others) is an example of this energy being harnessed for a specific purpose. Although it has been claimed by the arch sceptic and debunker, James (the amazing) Randi, real name James Randall Hamilton Zwinge, that this is no more than a conjuring trick based on subterfuge and misdirection, it does appear that in Geller’s case there may be rather more to it. Randi’s position apparently purports that if the phenomenon can be reproduced by trickery, then it must be a trick and nothing else. Indeed, it is worth remembering that Randi and an organisation called CSICOP, (the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims Of the Paranormal), a debunking organisation on whose behalf he often acts, hold that since virtually all paranormal phenomena can be reproduced by stage magicians and conjurers then none of it is valid, a view remarkably similar to that of Randi. It is also noticeable that when some individual is courageous enough to submit to scrutiny by this group they face tests apparently designed to fail.
small, perhaps about only 10% of the total mass of the spoon. If we consider that an electrical charge of sufficient power to create a change in the metal would, in electrical terms, require considerably more than 100 amps, then to create the alteration by willpower alone would require the brain, as opposed to mind, to generate the necessary power through its own efforts. Since this proposition is at best unlikely, then another source for this energy would have to be found. Perhaps the only way in which this might work is if the mind/consciousness only supplied the information required and the energy came from elsewhere. Would it perhaps be feasible that a non-corporeal force such as mind could act on the atomic matrix of the metal at a specific point and convey the desire that it should bend, in effect issuing an instruction for it to do so?

If, as suggested, the mind cannot possibly generate the required energy on its own, then where does it come form? One answer from unquestioning and often credulous believers is that it somehow operates outside any known law of physics and draws its power from ‘the aether’, a nebulous void existing alongside our own. Perhaps in one sense they are correct, but it is the terminology that is wrong. Perhaps the location of the power source should be called ‘The Zero Point Field’, a sea of untapped and virtually inexhaustible energy that really does exist all around us, but at very low level. There is another even more bizarre answer; if the desire itself to bend acts directly on the particles forming the metal of the spoon, then it does tend to give weight to the speculative theory that in one sense these minute, elementary particles are sentient, and if so are they effectively obeying orders?

Perhaps we should look at an example of this mystical genre, the apparent immunity of human beings to the effects of fire, where one of the theories generated by quantum physics, viz. the many worlds theory, may help illustrate how it functions. However, as we shall see, this explanation only serves to create an even deeper mystery by opening yet another door to the world of chaos magic. There have been many recorded instances where apparently normal human beings allow themselves to be exposed to extremes of heat with no obvious signs of harm. This includes everything from fire walking, which is well documented, to the apparent ability of certain people to swill molten metal in their mouths; the latter phenomenon was attributed to one Nathan Coker of Maryland in the USA. According to a well attested account published in ‘The New York Herald’ in September 1871, Coker, a blacksmith, allowed himself to be closely observed by several local dignitaries. According to the report a shovel was heated to white heat and Coker placed his bare feet on the metal until it cooled leaving no signs of damage to his skin. He is also reported to have handled red-hot irons and coals directly from the fire with no obvious ill effects. When questioned about his abilities Coker was quite unperturbed and commented that he had always had the ability to do this.

If this and similar cases are a true account of what was observed, then one must speculate of how this might have occurred, some sources attribute it to an ecstatic state induced by meditation or religious fervour, which might explain the lack of pain, but it does not explain why the flesh is not damaged in any way. The other class of exposure to extremes of heat is, of course, fire walking, where the participants walk through long trenches filled with either hot stones or smouldering ashes, again with no ill effects, in this instance the temperatures can be in excess of 450 deg C. While in the vast majority of cases the participants suffer no obvious damage, it has been noted that in some cases, if their concentration is diverted or broken, then severe burns can occur. Having said that, sometimes the participant is more or less pushed into the shimmering trench carrying no more protection than words of encouragement from the shaman overseeing the ritual and survives the ordeal unscathed; once again why should this be?
However, if spoon bending is a manifestation of a genuine but as yet undefined human ability, then we should examine the mechanics behind the phenomenon and to do this we must consider several factors. If we stay with the example of the teaspoon, although any small piece of metal would serve, the average teaspoon is perhaps 110 grams in weight and the energy required at the atomic level to affect the entire mass of the metal of which it is comprised is therefore considerable. However, the area in which the bend occurs is relatively
A similar set of phenomena surround the practices of some groups of Christian, Pentecostalist fundamentalists, who regularly drink poisons such as strychnine, handle poisonous snakes and place their limbs in fire; In most cases they suffer no ill effects, but in some cases they do. If asked how they can perform these feats they will honestly tell the questioner that their faith in God protects them from harm, and if they are damaged in any way then they did not pray with a great enough conviction or fervour. Perhaps both the fire handlers and poison drinkers do share a cosmic truth that neither properly understands. As mentioned
earlier, there is a theory that instead of one single universe in which everything exists, there are multiple universes, an infinite number of them; this is the multiverse in which one single action has innumerable results and all slightly different.

For example, in this universe someone rises from their chair to answer a knock on the front door, in another universe, at precisely the same moment, they rise, but go instead into the kitchen, or in another they do not get out of the chair, or no one knocks on the door at all and so on. In other words there are an infinite number of outcomes, it is a factor of what is called ‘collapsing the probability wave’, where all actions are potentials only, existing as waves of intent until they actually happen. The same principle may therefore apply to metal bending and fire handling/walking, where the person wishing to create the appropriate situation causes a localised alteration in reality into a universe where fire does not burn and metal bends just by an act of will. If this is the case then we are in fact contemplating the precise mechanism by which magic functions, forcing our desires on reality and making it happen. The ceremonies, robes and potions are purely window dressing, as indeed are the accoutrements adorning churches, synagogues and mosques, for in this context the holy man, be he priest, minister, rabbi, imam or tribal shaman, acts in the same role as a magician and the congregation become the source of the raw energy required to make the ‘magic’ work.
There are several good examples of this process at work; one such is perfectly illustrated by the early 20th century French traveller, Alexandra David-Neel, who spent some fourteen years in Tibet. During this time she became intensely interested in Tibetan mysticism and out of curiosity created a solidified thought form called a ‘Tulpa’ using the ‘dubtha rite’, which involves lengthy and intense meditative and visualisation techniques. By all accounts her creation, which she based on an image of a cheerful’ Tibetan monk, was seen on various occasions by other people who, not knowing its true nature, assumed it was human. However, it eventually became
disagreeable and difficult to control and she was forced to undertake the lengthy, according to her diary almost six months, process of dissolving it. Ms David-Neel also reports observing Tulpas created by various Tibetan mystics and holy men. Another example is quoted by Carlos Castaneda in a series of books describing his experiences with Don Juan Matus, a Mexican Yaqui Indian shaman. Castaneda describes an event where don Juan spontaneously created a small, rodent-like creature in the palm of his outstretched hand and allowed him to touch it. Don Juan then caused the creature to disappear.

It is interesting that, echoing some of the conclusions reached by pioneering quantum physicists like Werner Heisenberg and John Wheeler concerning ‘observer created universes’, Tibetan mystics hold that what we observe as solid reality is created entirely by our imaginations. In effect, it seems as though whoever is in charge of proceedings acts as a ‘lens’ to focus the will of the observers and on rare occasions, if the practitioner is sufficiently skilled, (the adjective, powerful, does not necessarily apply here,) the congregation (or coven) are not even necessary and the desire of the figurehead alone is enough. Unfortunately there have been very few occasions on which the phenomena described here have been examined by objective, qualified observers. Those who have taken the trouble to seek out and examine what has occurred have, in the main, comprised sceptics and debunkers who have no real interest in finding for the events and in many case quite the opposite. The reason for this is puzzling and the strictures placed upon many of those who appear to exhibit unusual talents have, for all practical purposes, rendered the experiments so biased in favour of those conducting them as to render them valueless.

`It may be that what we have briefly looked at here is the engine behind all manner of events described as ‘Fortean’ after the late 19th early 20th century American collector of bizarre and unlikely happenings Charles Fort. Fort specialised in collating all sorts of phenomena ranging from the traditional, i.e. hauntings and poltergeist manifestation, to spontaneous falls of frogs, stones and other anomalous objects. Crucially, he did not favour overtly ‘spiritual’ sources for these phenomena, instead where possible, he tried to link them to other explanations such as invisible, but natural, energies. While some of these occurrences may well have natural if unusual causes, some of them slot neatly into the possibility of alternate realities that sometimes intersect and interact with our own. From this point of view it can be argued that perhaps the ‘afterlife’ is, in reality, an alternate universe of which, on occasions, human beings accidentally catch glimpses. Could this be the source of ghosts and apparitions; speculation leading to the possibility that if we can see them, can they see us? It might also serve as an answer to why, on occasions, the ‘apparitions’ are as surprised to see us as we are to see them.

As with the majority of what has been discussed here, much is directly due to the perspective, mood and inclinations of the observer, leading to the conclusion that is it likely that among the bizarre computations of particle physics lies the text of the last book of magic: the final grimoire. At last, the grail sought by generations of ancient necromancers and magicians is here, no longer relying on dubious concoctions of powdered mandrake root, bat’s wings and newt’s eyes, but the mathematical tools and certainties to alter the literal core of reality itself and give humanity the choice to either achieve its ultimate destiny or utterly destroy itself.
